I love to center the clay which brings me back to my own center. Art saves lives. It keeps me engaged and inspired. I went to school for art with fantastic instructors - none more so than my first, Mrs. Morigushi. I was able to travel to Japan this year and furthered my understanding and spiritual aspect of this work.

After 2005 to Pacific Grove a whole new world opened up to me when I began taking metal arts classes at Monterey Peninsula College. By 2020 I had completed the entire program and earned a Certificate of Achievement in Metal Arts. The passion for creating in metals has moved me out of the classroom and into my home studio where I now create my pieces. I am inspired by our tall trees and the Coastal breeze while I work. I am always collecting new stones to be set, and I can't wait for the next one!

I am a Thai self-taught oil painter based in Monterey, California. My work is inspired by the changing light, ocean air, and quiet beauty of the California coast. I paint colorful landscapes from around Monterey as well as expressive still life. Using bold color and layered brushstrokes, I aim to capture not only the place, but the feeling of being there. Each painting begins with observation and grows through intuition and emotion. Working from my small garage studio, I hope my paintings bring warmth, color, and a sense of place into people’s homes.

Paola’s art is about love of the land and rivers. Ephemeral light, patterns, shapes, movement, relationships of colors inspire Paola to respond to the innate urge to create, to be actively engaged in the dynamics of the natural world. Her art also encompasses dedication to protecting what she can, by actively caring for the land and its inhabitants, most specifically the RisingLeaf Sanctuary where she has lived since 1974. Paola’s life work is shared in the book Our Journey to Sustainability, How Everyday Heroes Make a Difference by Jon Biemer. Berthoin's watershed and animal paintings are collected nationally and internationally.

Brian Blood, a resident of Pebble Beach, California, is widely recognized as one of California’s most important plein air impressionist artists. He began his professional life as a graphic artist in Boston. Moving to San Francisco in 1985 which took him to the Academy of Art University for both a BFA and MFA. Blood was an instructor in the Fine Art Dept at the Academy of Art University for 15 years. Now a student of nature, he is constantly seeking to better his art. After retiring from teaching ceramics in Silicon Valley, we answered the call of the ocean and have settled nicely on the coast where the sights, smells and sounds of the environment dictate my creative actions, the outcome is filled with marine focused garden works, tableware ladened with images of jelly fish, octopuses, fish and squid, and pieces glazed in the various colors of the sea. I also find much inspiration during my weekly shift at the Monterey Bay Aquarium where I study both the anatomy and behavior of ocean life.

My current work is still guided by birds in the ever-changing exploration of nature and clay; that is the interplay of observation, fantasy, imagination and technical skills. I embrace a process of experimentation in representing the movement and individual character of each bird. The clay medium is obviously one limitation and the bird's characteristics form is another kind of challenge. So the work often involves as much “technical” problem-solving as freely creating the elegance of the bird form. My work is domestic but not functional. It emphasizes the environment of the bird as a metaphor for the home.

As an artist I find myself dancing between abstraction and the natural world. I am inspired by the natural environment, including plants, agriculture, and the ocean. I also surround myself with books of all types and pull inspiration from them, and sometimes parts of the books end up in some of my pieces. I purposefully bounce back and forth between a few different mediums (oil, acrylic, printmaking, and collage) so that I can allow myself to continuously explore, be playful, and see how my ideas will translate differently through these mediums and evoke different feelings.

It is paramount that we protect and preserve our world: if I can capture a moment and a feeling of a particular space and time: I have succeeded. I am fascinated by the dichotomy in our world: light vs shadow, fluid vs solid, movement vs stillness; humanity in its habitat vs untouched nature. These differences, tensions if you will, are what draw me to a particular scene. It is what I strive to portray in order to infuse my painting with visual interest and feeling. I want the viewer to feel as immersed as I do when I am painting.

As a young child, I learned the art of crochet to create small, stuffed animals called arimigurumi. As a teacher of mathematics and music, I studied human information processing and development. As a mother of four girls, I returned to crochet. My intention was to create pieces which stimulated neurological and sensory development while keeping an eye towards ease-of-use. My journey continues. Crochet alone, as a fiber art, cannot be machine-made. With only hook and yarn, each piece, through the use of color, shape, pattern and texture, speaks to babies and adults alike. Each piece is handmade and unique.

“I love the interplay of color and texture, and the creative freedom that abstract painting offers” says Kiran Kamath. She is inspired by nature, emotions, and things around her as she continues to hone her skills. She enjoys the process of exploration, evolution, and creation in expressive abstract painting. Kiran began painting in 2019 after a career in academia and in the travel industry. After she retired, she wanted to do things she had never done before. Since her career demanded mostly left-brain-oriented work, she was eager to explore right-brain-oriented avocations. She took classes in ceramics and painting and knew “this was it!” when she began painting. She is transported to another world and blisses out when she has her “flow moments” while painting. Her home studio is her “happy place” where she loves to explore new ideas, textures, and unconventional tools. She enjoys the process of layering and creating depth in her paintings with vibrant colors, texture, and collage on canvas and on board.

The inspiration for my artwork comes from elements of nature: trees, branches, wings, birds, clouds. Surprising patterns I find in the swirl of coffee foam, the appearance of form in shadow or birds in flight connect me to the moment, conveying a sense of spirit, emotion and meaning. I reinterpret these through monotypes using stencils or collage material, serigraphs painting and ceramics as well. I take inspiration from the Japanese esthetic of form and function, and particularly from the wabi-sabi concept of the beauty of the imperfect. My jewelry has a certain primitive quality that acknowledges the quiet, worn esthetic of imperfection. It is intentional. My jewelry is made of sterling silver, red brass, copper and enamel, as well as occasionally some images from Japanese art. I paint from Irish literature ;it gives me the sense of both mystery and play. I have a history of doing tapestry weaving, but too much love of drawing to do it often. Connection with my heritage became so real to me during COVID. I was contacted by the James Joyce Center in Dublin, itself ,asking to use one of my paintings for their annual Blooms Day Festival. it was digital due to the pandemic, and my Molly Bloom painting was a part of their virtual celebration. In 2022 I then went to Dublin, myself ,presenting 12 images from Ulysses .

I began working with Stained Glass in 1977, and produced seven pieces in homes that I designed and built in Los Gatos and Saratoga, California as a General Contractor. I graduated from San Jose State in 1973 with a B.A. in Art Painting and Art History. After graduation I studied Art History in Greece, and Art Painting in Italy. Recently, I have returned to Stained Glass designs producing over twenty new pieces. Some of these are modern, abstract, and original designs, and others are portrait and small versions of church windows from an ancient chapel outside of Lausanne, Switzerland.
