Yesterday afternoon, the corner of Broadway Avenue was buzzing with music, community pride, and the sweet scent of fresh pastries as Seaside celebrated the official unveiling of the spectacular new mural at Lupita’s Bakery.
Commissioned by the Arts Council for Monterey County (Arts4MC) and funded by a grant from the City of Seaside, this new piece of public art was designed to beautify our community spaces, celebrate neighborhood identity, and support local businesses. But more importantly, it beautifully captures the heart and history of a beloved local family.
The Story on the Wall
Painted by talented Seaside artist Jorge Torres of Better Days Sign Co., the mural is a visual journey of migration, resilience, and entrepreneurship. Torres, whose work is deeply inspired by culture and local storytelling, masterfully translated the family’s heritage into a vibrant masterpiece.
The mural reads like a story from left to right:
The Roots (Left): The imagery of mountains, village forms, and wheat pays homage to San Pablo, Oaxaca, where the family’s traditions began. The wheat represents the foundational hard work and generations of baking behind every recipe.
The Heart (Center): A glowing sun portrait represents Lupita herself, radiating warmth, love, and the enduring strength that guides her family. She is crowned with white calla lilies—her favorite flower—to honor her memory, while traditional bread sits below, symbolizing the recipes passed down and shared with the community today.
The Journey (Right): The flowing landscape transitions into the coastal hills of Seaside, representing the family’s migration and their success in building something deeply meaningful in a new home. The warm, moving sky reflects the welcoming, gathering spirit that the bakery brings to the neighborhood.
A Community Gathering
The unveiling event on June 29th was exactly what a community celebration should be. Project partners from Arts4MC, the City of Seaside, and the bakery shared heartfelt remarks before the official unveiling. Local musician Cesar Flores provided beautiful live music that set a joyful tone, while attendees—including the Mayor of Seaside and the City Manager—enjoyed delicious complimentary drinks and pastries straight from Lupita’s ovens.
Following the speeches, neighbors and friends gathered for a community photo session in front of the vibrant new landmark, capturing a moment of true Seaside pride.
Whether you know the full history of the family or are just stopping by for your morning pan dulce, the mural is meant to evoke a sense of belonging and cultural warmth.
