Our Murals Program unites muralists, schools, community organizations, local businesses, and government agencies across the county to create immersive, large-scale public art projects that transform spaces and inspire communities.
One recent example is a vibrant new mural at the Soledad Women’s Health Center, created by local artist Amy Burkman, a Salinas Valley native and ovarian cancer survivor.
Amy shared her vision for the piece:
“I understand from personal experience the importance of having a healthcare facility where you feel seen, understood, and cared for, and that’s what I kept in mind while creating this concept. I designed three women representing different life stages – a pregnant woman, healthcare worker, and elder – with expressions that convey strength and hope. Orbs of light bloom into flowers to symbolize transformation and growth, while the Salinas Valley hills weave softly through the background to ground this story of care in our local landscape.”
This project was made possible through our partnership with the Soledad Community Health Care District (SCHCD), which has been serving Soledad and surrounding rural communities since 1948. With a mission to provide accessible, family-centered care, SCHCD continues to inspire wellness for people of all ages across South Monterey County.
Murals like this demonstrate how public art can both reflect and strengthen the values of the communities they serve.Through our program, talented muralists empower young people, energize communities, and provide professional development opportunities for local artists, while highlighting stories unique to each community.
