Creating Space for Healing and Connection

Arts4Healing: Stitching Hope and Second Chances

Arts4MC’s Arts4Healing program brings the power of creativity to those who need it most. It offers meaningful art experiences for at-risk youth, seniors, and other vulnerable communities. Through partnerships with Sun Street Centers, CHISPA, the Veterans Transition Center, Meals on Wheels, Rancho Cielo, and others, Arts4Healing nurtures emotional wellness, resilience, and self-expression throughout Monterey County. One of the most moving examples of this work is happening behind the walls of Monterey County’s Juvenile Hall and Youth Center. Here, art is quietly transforming lives.

Crocheting Kindness at the Youth Center

Over the past year, Teaching Artist Victoria Donohue has led visual arts workshops that create a space for young residents to reflect, build confidence, and find healing through self-expression. Her consistent and compassionate approach has opened creative pathways for these youth, helping them explore emotions and connect with a broader sense of purpose. Among the many projects she’s introduced, one of the most unexpected and meaningful has been crocheting beanies. It quickly became a favorite activity, with young participants putting care and intention into each stitch. Together, they’ve created and donated almost 100 handmade hats to children battling cancer and others in need. Deliveries have gone to Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital, CHOMP, St. Jude’s, and local homeless communities. “I’m so PROUD of the young men at Monterey County Youth Center,” Victoria shared. “They continue making beanies for the children battling cancer at Lucile Packard’s Hospital. We’ve laundered and individually packaged every single one so they’re ready to go.”

Recognizing the Power of Creativity

In July, Victoria and the Arts Council were honored during Provider Appreciation Day. They received a Certificate of Appreciation from the Monterey County Probation Department, recognizing their dedication to educating, guiding, and uplifting youth through art.
Arts4Healing is more than a program. It’s a reminder of what’s possible when creativity meets compassion. And it’s made possible by teaching artists like Victoria, who show up with consistency, empathy, and a deep belief in the transformative power of the arts.
