SUMMARY:Juilliard Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Pre-concert lecture at 6:30 pm.\nThe program includes pieces by Antonín\, Leoš\, and Ludwig.\n\nAntonín Dvořák Cypresses (1887)\n\nLeoš Janáček String Quartet No. 2: Intimate Letters (1928)\n\nLudwig Van Beethoven String Quartet No. 13 in B-flat Major\, op. 130\,\n\nwith Große Fuge\, op. 133 (1825)\n\n\n\nPerformers\n\nAreta Zhulla\, violin\n\nRonald Copes\, violin\n\nMolly Carr\, viola\n\nAstrid Schween\, cello\n\n\n\nAbout the Performers\n\nWith unparalleled artistry and enduring vigor\, the Juilliard String Quartet (JSQ) continues to inspire audiences around the world. Founded in 1946 and hailed by The Boston Globe as “the most important American quartet in history\,” the ensemble draws on a deep and vital engagement to the classics\, while embracing the mission of championing new works\, a vibrant combination of the familiar and the daring. Each performance of the Juilliard String Quartet is a unique experience\, bringing together the four members’ profound understanding\, total commitment\, and unceasing curiosity in sharing the wonders of the string quartet literature.\n\nAdding to its celebrated discography\, an album of works by Beethoven\, Bartók\, and Dvořák was released by Sony Classical in April 2021 to critical acclaim. Additionally\, Sony Masterworks released a JSQ catalog release (The Early Juilliard Recordings) in June 2021. In the fall of 2018\, the JSQ released an album on Sony featuring the world premiere recording of Mario Davidovsky’s Fragments (2016)\, together with Beethoven’s Quartet Op. 95 and Bartók’s Quartet No. 1. Additionally\, Sony Classical’s 2014 reissue of the Quartet’s landmark recordings of the first four Elliott Carter String Quartets along with the 2013 recording of Carter’s fifth quartet traces a remarkable period in the evolution of both the composer and the ensemble. The Quartet’s recordings of the Bartók and Schoenberg Quartets\, as well as those of Debussy\, Ravel and Beethoven\, have won Grammy Awards\, and in 2011 the JSQ became the first classical music ensemble to receive a lifetime achievement award from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences.\n\nDevoted master teachers\, the members of the Juilliard String Quartet offer classes and open rehearsals when on tour. The JSQ is String Quartet in Residence at the Juilliard School and its members – Areta Zhulla\, Ronald Copes\, Molly Carr\, and Astrid Schween – are all sought-after teachers on the string and chamber music faculties. Each May\, they host the five-day internationally recognized Juilliard String Quartet Seminar. During the summer\, the JSQ works closely on string quartet repertoire with students at the Tanglewood Music Center.

SUMMARY:Isidore Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Pre-concert lecture at 6:30 pm.\n\nThe program includes pieces by Erwin\, Felix\, Gabriella\, and Maurice.\n\nErwin Schulhoff Five Pieces for String Quartet\n\nFelix Mendelssohn String Quintet No. 5 in E-flat Major\, Op.44 No.3\n\nGabriella Smith Carrot Revolution for String Quartet\n\nMaurice Ravel String Quartet in F Major\n\n\n\nPerformers\n\nAdrian Steele\, violin\n\nPhoenix Avalon\, violin\n\nDevin Moore\, viola\n\nJoshua McClendon\, cello\n\n\n\nAbout The Ensemble\n\nThe members of the quartet are violinists Adrian Steele and Phoenix Avalon\, violist Devin Moore\, and cellist Joshua McClendon. The four began as an ensemble at the Juilliard School\, and following a break during the global pandemic reconvened at the Kneisel Hall Chamber Music Festival in the summer of 2021 under the tutelage of Joel Krosnick. In addition to Mr. Krosnick\, the ISQ has coached with Joseph Lin\, Astrid Schween\, Laurie Smukler\, Joseph Kalichstein\, Roger Tapping\, Misha Amory\, Timothy Eddy\, Donald Weilerstein\, Atar Arad\, Robert McDonald\, Christoph Richter\, Miriam Fried\, and Paul Biss.\n\nWinners of a 2023 Avery Fisher Career Grant\, and the 14th Banff International String Quartet Competition in 2022\, the New York City-based Isidore String Quartet was formed in 2019 with a vision to revisit\, rediscover\, and reinvigorate the repertory. The quartet is heavily influenced by the Juilliard String Quartet and the idea of ‘approaching the established as if it were brand new\, and the new as if it were firmly established.’\n\nThe Isidore Quartet has appeared on major series in Chicago\, Pittsburgh\, Seattle\, Durham\, Washington (JFK Center)\, San Antonio\, Toronto\, Montreal\, and Ottawa\, and has collaborated with a number of eminent performers including James Ehnes\, Jeremy Denk\, Shai Wosner\, and Jon Nakamatsu. Their 23/24 season will feature appearances in Berkeley (Cal Performances)\, Boston (Celebrity Series)\, Washington DC (Phillips Collection)\, New York (92nd St. Y)\, Chicago\, Baltimore\, Ann Arbor\, Denver\, Houston\, Indianapolis\, Tucson\, Phoenix\, Santa Fe\, La Jolla\, Aspen\, Vancouver\, Calgary\, Edmonton\, and at Dartmouth College\, and Spivey Hall in Georgia\, among many others. European highlights include Edinburgh\, Lucerne\, Brussels\, Amsterdam\, Hanover\, Frankfurt\, and Hamburg’s ElbPhilharmonie.\n\nOutside the concert hall the quartet has worked with PROJECT: MUSIC HEALS US providing encouragement\, education\, and healing to marginalized communities – including elderly\, disabled\, rehabilitating incarcerated and homeless populations – who otherwise have limited access to high-quality live music performance. They have also been the resident ensemble for the Contemporary Alexander School/Alexander Alliance International. In conjunction with those well-versed in the world of Alexander Technique\, as well as other performers\, the ISQ explores the vast landscape of body awareness\, mental preparation\, and performance practice.\n\nThe name Isidore recognizes the ensemble’s musical connection to the Juilliard Quartet: one of that group’s early members was legendary violinist Isidore Cohen. Additionally\, it acknowledges a shared affection for a certain libation – legend has it a Greek monk named Isidore concocted the first genuine vodka recipe for the Grand Duchy of Moscow!

Having given highly acclaimed performances of the complete Carter cycle in San Francisco\, New York\, Chicago\, and Houston; the Mendelssohn cycle in Napa\, Australia\, New York\, and Pittsburgh; and the Beethoven cycle in New York\, Denver\, St. Paul\, Chicago\, Napa\, and Tokyo (in an unprecedented presentation of five concerts in three days at Suntory Hall)\, the Quartet presented the monumental Shostakovich cycle in Chicago\, New York\, Montreal\, and at London’s Wigmore Hall. The Quartet has been widely praised for these cycles\, with critics calling the concerts “brilliant\,” “astonishing\,” “gripping\,” and “breathtaking.” \n\nAn ardent advocate of contemporary music\, the Pacifica Quartet commissions and performs many new works including those by Keeril Makan\, Julia Wolfe\, and Shulamit Ran\, the latter in partnership with the Music Accord consortium\, London’s Wigmore Hall\, and Tokyo’s Suntory Hall. The work – entitled Glitter\, Doom\, Shards\, Memory – had its New York debut as part of the Chamber Music Society at Lincoln Center series.\n\nThe members of the Pacifica Quartet live in Bloomington\, IN\, where they serve as quartet-in-residence and full-time faculty members at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music. Prior to their appointment\, the Quartet was on the faculty of the University of Illinois at Champaign Urbana from 2003 to 2012\, and also served as resident performing artist at the University of Chicago for seventeen years.

SUMMARY:Chicago Piano Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Pre-concert lecture at 6:30 pm. The program includes pieces by Turina\, Cras\, and Brahms. \nFULL DESCRIPTION \nJoaquín Turina Piano Quartet\nJean Cras String Trio\nJohannes Brahms Piano Quartet No. 3 in C Minor\, op. 60 \nPerformers \nDesiree Ruhstrat\, violin\nAurelien Fort Pederzoli\, viola\nDavid Cunliffe\, cello\nMarta Aznavoorian\, piano \nAbout the Performers \nViolinist Desirée Ruhstrat\, cellist David Cunliffe\, and pianist Marta Aznavoorian are known to the CMMB audience for their successful performance in October 2021 as the Lincoln Trio. Ruhstrat\, Cunliffe\, and violist Aurélien Fort Pederzoli make up the critically-acclaimed Black Oak Ensemble\, one of the leading string trios on the international scene. When the two trios combine (yes\, in this case\, 3 + 3 = 4!)\, they become the superlative CHICAGO PIANO QUARTET. \nThe honors\, achievements\, and critical acclaim garnered by the Lincoln Trio and the Black Oak Ensemble are too numerous to mention. The Lincoln Trio was nominated for a 2017 GRAMMY Award for Best Performance by a Small Ensemble; their playing was praised by Joshua Kosman as “fervent and imaginative” and by The Strad as “sensational.” The Black Oak Ensemble’s latest CD reached #1 on the Billboard Classical Charts in July 2022. Since then\, it has been lauded in the U.S. and international press\, including Canada\, the Netherlands\, and Germany. Fanfare said\, “The players fully inhabit the spirit of whatever work they are playing at the moment\, performing each one with as ardent a flame as if they had written it themselves.”
