Sunset Center\, together with the Carmel Chamber of Commerce\, will host a press conference and ribbon-cutting on Wednesday\, August 26\, 2026\, from 1 to 2 p.m.\, officially opening the campaign. Century of Creativity honors two milestones on one beloved campus. In 2026\, the Center celebrates the 100th anniversary of its original 1926 building\, the home of the former Sunset School\, where generations of local families learned\, grew\, and — for many — stepped onto a stage for the very first time. In 2031\, the campaign culminates with 100 years of live performance in the theater\, whose landmark auditorium first opened its doors in 1931. Between now and then\, every performance\, exhibition\, and gathering becomes part of one larger community story. \nFrom its beginnings as a neighborhood school to its role today as a vibrant center for arts\, culture\, learning\, and community\, Sunset Center has been woven into the fabric of Carmel life for a century — and Century of Creativity invites the whole community to help write its next chapter.\n“For 100 years\, Sunset has brought people together. From its beginnings as a neighborhood school to the community gathering place it is today\, generations have learned\, performed\, celebrated\, and made lasting memories here. SUMMARY:Carmel Bach Festival: Beethoven 6 Symphony & Appalachian Spring
DESCRIPTION:Beethoven subtitled his Pastoral Symphony “Recollections of Country Life”. Each of its five movements depicts a countryside scene. The first movement conveys the calm joy of arriving in the countryside\, with gentle\, flowing melodies. The second evokes a babbling brook\, while woodwinds mimic birdsong. In the third\, people dance and celebrate with lively rhythms. The fourth depicts a sudden\, dramatic thunderstorm\, one of Beethoven’s earliest musical portrayals of nature’s power. The final movement offers a peaceful shepherd’s song and a sense of restored serenity. For fans of Disney\, this piece will sound familiar\, as it was featured in Fantasia (1940). \nAppalachian Spring takes its title from a rural Pennsylvania farmhouse and evokes the optimism and spirit of pioneer life in early America. Featuring the iconic Shaker melody Simple Gifts\, Copland’s work is one of his most celebrated\, known for its open textures\, folk-inspired melodies\, and enduring association with the quintessential “American sound.” \nCelebrating a different perspective on the America landscape\, Puerto Rican composer Angélica Negrón is our featured composer this year. Her work\, Marejada\, captures the movement and energy of the sea through inventive textures and rhythmic drive. Negrón offers a fresh and compelling voice that complements Copland’s vision while reflecting her own cultural and musical soundscape.

SUMMARY:Carmel Bach Festival: Vivaldi Four Seasons & Handel Water Music
DESCRIPTION:Vivaldi’s Four Seasons is a set of four violin concertos paired with short poems that describe the scenes each movement depicts: birds singing\, dogs barking\, storms breaking\, and people celebrating. Vivaldi brings these images to life with musical details such as trills for birds\, a repeating viola line for a dog\, droning lines for Summer’s heat\, and chattering teeth in Winter. The solo violin leads the story in each concerto\, acting almost like a narrator. These concertos have captivated listeners for centuries and appear frequently in films\, including The Four Seasons (1981) and Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019). \nHandel’s Water Music was composed in 1717 for a royal barge trip on the Thames\, performed outdoors for King George I as the boats traveled along the river. The suites include a series of dance movements for strings\, horns\, oboes\, and bassoons\, designed to carry across the water. Its lively rhythms and bright orchestration have made it one of Handel’s best-known works\, and it has appeared in films such as Dead Poets Society (1989).

Leonard implores the creatures around them to set aside their differences and help free Hawk from a rabbit warren. Don’t miss this epic adventure as we bring extraordinary\, multisensory experiences that combine music\, theater\, and visual art with sound effects – some of them created by you\, the audience – in an immersive and interactive experience. Bring your best bird call or bird song. You’ll have so much fun\, you might even grow feathers! \nMusic by Vivaldi\, Haydn\, Respighi\, Saint-Saens\, Mussorgsky\, Kats-Chernin\, Britten\, and yes\, Byrd. We close with the jazz standard\, Birdland\, and invite the audience to sing along. The post-concert fair features DD\, the red-tailed hawk\, brought to us by the SPCA. The Ventana Wildlife Society and the Monterey Audubon Society will have displays. The first movement conveys the calm joy of arriving in the countryside\, with gentle\, flowing melodies. The second evokes a babbling brook\, while woodwinds mimic birdsong. In the third\, people dance and celebrate with lively rhythms. The fourth depicts a sudden\, dramatic thunderstorm\, one of Beethoven’s earliest musical portrayals of nature’s power. The final movement offers a peaceful shepherd’s song and a sense of restored serenity. For fans of Disney\, this piece will sound familiar\, as it was featured in Fantasia (1940). \nAppalachian Spring takes its title from a rural Pennsylvania farmhouse and evokes the optimism and spirit of pioneer life in early America. Featuring the iconic Shaker melody Simple Gifts\, Copland’s work is one of his most celebrated\, known for its open textures\, folk-inspired melodies\, and enduring association with the quintessential “American sound.” \nCelebrating a different perspective on the America landscape\, Puerto Rican composer Angélica Negrón is our featured composer this year. Her work\, Marejada\, captures the movement and energy of the sea through inventive textures and rhythmic drive. Negrón offers a fresh and compelling voice that complements Copland’s vision while reflecting her own cultural and musical soundscape.

DESCRIPTION:Vivaldi’s Four Seasons is a set of four violin concertos paired with short poems that describe the scenes each movement depicts: birds singing\, dogs barking\, storms breaking\, and people celebrating. Vivaldi brings these images to life with musical details such as trills for birds\, a repeating viola line for a dog\, droning lines for Summer’s heat\, and chattering teeth in Winter. The solo violin leads the story in each concerto\, acting almost like a narrator. These concertos have captivated listeners for centuries and appear frequently in films\, including The Four Seasons (1981) and Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019). \nHandel’s Water Music was composed in 1717 for a royal barge trip on the Thames\, performed outdoors for King George I as the boats traveled along the river. The suites include a series of dance movements for strings\, horns\, oboes\, and bassoons\, designed to carry across the water. Its lively rhythms and bright orchestration have made it one of Handel’s best-known works\, and it has appeared in films such as Dead Poets Society (1989).

DESCRIPTION:A Light Exists in Spring is the title of an Emily Dickinson poem. It is also the title of our exciting PhotoCarmel exhibition in the Marjorie Evans Gallery at the Sunset Center in Carmel! This exhibition will feature works by the Center for Photographic Art’s incredible team of artists who also happen to be volunteers\, trustees\, and staff members at our organization. They are not just talented photographers\, but also devoted members of our community. This group of nearly 50 local artists pursues a variety of photographic media\, but one of the things that unites them is their vision and their love of the landscape\, of light\, of change\, of the glorious medium of photography. This exhibition’s title references the season of hope. And this exhibition\, curated by the Center for Photographic Art’s executive director\, Ann Jastrab\, will also leave a lasting impression on visitors to the Marjorie Evans Gallery. SUMMARY:CALIDORE STRING QUARTET Chamber Music Monterey Bay
DESCRIPTION:Chamber Music Monterey Bay will present the highly acclaimed Calidore String Quartet for the final concert of our 2025-2026 Season. The Washington Post wrote of the Calidore\, “Four more individual musicians are unimaginable\, yet these speak\, breathe\, think and feel as one.” As was true for our previous ensemble\, the Dover Quartet\, this spectacular ensemble has appeared for CMMB only virtually\, in 2020. We are thrilled to present them in person. \nThe Calidore Quartet brings a big program to their performance in Carmel: A beautiful quartet by Haydn (Op. 76 no. 5)\, a powerful work by Shostakovich\, his String Quartet No. 8\, which we haven’t presented in over 20 years\, and Beethoven’s immense and profoundly moving String Quartet Op. 131. Writing of the Calidore\, The New York Times said: “Deep reserves of virtuosity and irrepressible dramatic instinct.” The Los Angeles Times noted that the Calidore are “Astonishing …shockingly deep… [with] the kind of sublimity other quartets spend a lifetime seeking.” \nWe hope to see you at Sunset Center to hear CMMB’s fifth and final concert\, with an extraordinary ensemble and a powerful closing for our 59th Season. \nThe concert will be preceded by a 30-minute talk by Bay Area musicologist Ian Scarf. Do Frank Zappa and Ludwig van Beethoven belong on the same concert? I definitely think so\, and I hope you’ll join us and decide for yourself! They both changed music forever\, and they weren’t afraid to be brash\, potent and political\,” says Jayce. \n“The world premiere of John Wineglass’s new clarinet concerto—titled Democracy\, and featuring Mariam Adam—tackles heroism and politics head on. We’ll also feature Symphony No. 2 of Joseph Boulogne\, Chevalier de Saint-Geroges\, a pioneering\, multi-talented (and certainly heroic) composer of 18th century France\,” says Jayce. \nPre-Concert Lectures – Lectures are included with all concert tickets and are held on Saturday\, 6:30-7:00 PM with Musicologist Christopher Anderson-Bazzoli and composer John Wineglass\, and Sunday\, 2:00-2:30 PM with Music Director and Conductor Jayce Ogren and composer John Wineglass\, in the Sunset Center auditorium. SUMMARY:Dover Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Chamber Music Monterey Bay is thrilled to present as our fourth concert of the season the extraordinary Dover Quartet\, which BBC Music Magazine pronounced as “one of the greatest quartets of the last 100 years.” They have frequently been favorably compared to the great American string quartets of years past\, such as the Emerson or Guarneri Quartets\, for their depths of originality and musicianship. Their last appearance for CMMB was a streaming performance online during the pandemic\, so we are overjoyed to welcome them back in person. \nThe Dover Quartet is currently the Penelope P. Watkins Ensemble in Residence at the Curtis Institute of Music\, as well as Quartet in Residence at Northwestern University’s Bienen School of Music. The Chicago Tribune described their performances as embodying “expert musicianship\, razor-sharp ensemble\, deep musical feeling and a palpable commitment to communication.” We are proud to have them here to share their amazing music making with our Peninsula audience. \nThey will perform an exciting and unusual program featuring works by Jessie Montgomery\, Franz Joseph Haydn\, Karol Szymanowski\, and Felix Mendelssohn\, timeless compositions spanning the years from 1772 to 2012. Each work is a masterpiece of the chamber music literature. \nThe New Yorker called them “the young American String Quartet of the moment\,” and we are over the moon to be bringing them to our wonderful corner of the world with this spectacular program.
