SUMMARY:Arts in New Youth Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Chris Morello \nExecutive Director\, Monterey Regional Airport \n831-648-7000 \ncmorello@montereyairport.com \nMonterey Regional Airport Weaves the Natural World with the Arts in New Youth Exhibition: Featuring the work and stories of talented young artists from Monterey County \nMONTEREY\, Calif. (January 30\, 2026) — Timing perfectly with the first blooms of spring\, the Monterey Airport’s Art at the Airport program unveils a special exhibition: Nature Journaling: A Lens into Conservation. This exhibit\, in partnership with the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History\, explores the deep connections between the human and natural worlds through nature journals and art created by Monterey County youth ages 3-17. \nCurated by the Museum’s Interpretive Programs Manager Natalie Johnston and Education Director Liese Murphree\, the exhibit explores the ways in which humans are part of nature and how flora\, fauna\, and habitats in Monterey County feel meaningful. “These nature journals show kids’ superpowers of observation\, and we are honored to partner with the airport on this project!” says Murphree. \nThe pieces invite visitors to engage with the work the same way it was created: by slowing down\, observing\, and being curious about the world around us. “I am inspired every day by the curiosity and love of nature our young visitors have. My goal with this exhibit is to share some of that wonder.” says Johnston. Inspiring wonder includes inviting visitors to start their own nature journal by sharing techniques (hint\, it’s pretty easy and fun). \nNature Journaling: A Lens into Conservation will be displayed at the Monterey Regional Airport’s Youth Art Gallery now through the spring of 2026. Passengers and airport visitors are encouraged to view the new Art at the Airport exhibition and celebrate our region’s talented young artists and stunning natural wonders. \nAbout the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History \nIn 1883\, the Museum opened its doors among the first wave of natural history museums in America. Naturalists of this era began a national tradition of hands-on science education and nature preservation\, a tradition the Museum has continued for over 140 years. The Museum’s mission is to inspire discovery\, wonder\, and stewardship of our cultural and natural world. The Museum supports conservation\, scientific literacy\, co-curation\, and deep learning towards a resilient community and sustainable future. Their work is made possible\, in part\, by the following generous donors: American Water Charitable Foundation\, City of Pacific Grove\, Community Foundation for Monterey County\, Harden Foundation\, Helen Johnson Endowment Funds\, Monterey Peninsula Foundation\, and Shelby Cullom Davis Charitable Fund. The Museum is open to the public Wednesday-Sunday\, 10am-4pm. For more information visit www.pgmuseum.org or on social media at @PGMuseum. \nAbout the Monterey Regional Airport: \nMonterey Regional Airport (MRY) is Monterey County’s only commercial airport and accommodates over 600\,000 passengers each year. The airport serves nine nonstop markets with an average of 17 daily departures. We are committed to providing our customers with superior services and a convenient\, hassle-free experience in a safe\, secure\, professional environment. The MRY Metamorphosis\, an FAA-required Safety Enhancement Program\, includes a replacement terminal that will welcome passengers in June 2027\, and will transform how Monterey residents and visitors travel. SUMMARY:New Monarch Butterfly Documentary to Screen at Pacific Grove Museum
DESCRIPTION:The Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History has been studying numbers of Western monarch butterflies since 1997\, and that work\, along with work of other organizations\, is featured in a new full-length documentary by filmmaker Ian A. Nelson. Screening at the Museum on January 16 the film\, titled Western Monarch Butterflies: Protecting Our Pollinators\, follows the work of conservation organizations attempting to save this beloved and beleaguered invertebrate who scientists say have lost over 95% of their historic populations. \n“The main takeaway from this film is that small actions can have a large impact\, especially when we choose to act together.” says Nelson\, “I hope viewers feel encouraged to create habitat for monarchs and other pollinators in their backyards and to get involved in conservation efforts working to protect these spaces on a larger scale.” \nThe film follows monarchs over the course of a year\, interweaving their life cycle with the human efforts supporting them along their migratory journey. The result is a layered portrayal of the interconnectedness of humans and monarchs that demonstrates our reliance on each other and ways in which humans can help the ecosystems they are part of. \nThe screening will take place Friday\, January 16\, from 5:30-7:30pm and will feature a Q&A with Ian after the 70-minute film has completed. All purchases from tickets sold will benefit monarch conservation\, and Museum Members of all levels will receive a discounted admission price. SUMMARY:PG Museum’s History on Tap Delves into Vigilantes\, Vendettas\, and Monterey County’s Hidden Stash of Gold
DESCRIPTION:Legend has it that a stash of millions of dollars’ worth of gold still awaits discovery somewhere in Monterey County\, and that’s not even the most interesting part of\nthe true story shared at the Pacific Grove Museum’s History on Tap on November 13th. Attendees will hear the story of Jose Maria Sanchez\, an early cattle rancher and one of the county’s wealthiest men\, who upon his untimely death left the hoard of treasure\nfor his children. From there\, avarice\, jealousy\, feuds\, corruption\, and all the human failings that can appear when a bounty of this magnitude is on the line took hold\, leading to deaths\, murders\, shootouts\, and ghost stories that continue to this day. \nThere’s far more to this tale than can be written here\, but participants will be in very good hands with speakers Brian Edwards\, Library & Museums Director for the City of Monterey\, and Hayley Aiello\, Artifacts\nSpecialist with the City of Monterey and Curatorial Aid with California State Parks. Together they’ll weave this tale of a Monterey from over 150 years ago and find some common ground with today’s landscapes. With a happy half-hour sponsored by Dust Bowl Brewing\nCompany\, the night\, and the story\, should prove unforgettable. \nHistory on Tap will occur on Thursday\, 11/13\, from 5:30-7:30pm. The night will begin with a happy half-hour\, followed by the talk from 6-7 and an audience Q&A from 7-7:30. Talks like this at the Museum often sell\nout\, so interested parties are encouraged to buy their tickets in advance at PGMuseum.org/Events. The Museum’s Science on Tap events are sponsored by PG&E\, whose sponsorship reflects PG&E’s commitment to fostering educational opportunities and connecting people\nwith the natural world. \nUpcoming events at the Museum: \nTidepool Field Sketching Classes: 11/2 & 11/16\, 1-3pm \nGuided Monarch Walks with MPRPD: 11/8 & 11/9\, 10-11am \nHistory on Tap: Vigilantes\, Vendettas\, & the Secret Gold of Monterey: 11/13\, 5:30-7:30pm \nBrown Bag Talk: Winged Wonders\, Biology & Conservation of Monarch Butterflies\, 11/14\, 12:15-12:45 \nSpecial Qigong Session: 11/15\, 9-10am \nScience Saturday: Monarch & Pollinator Magic\, 11/29. 10am-3pm \nWinter Wreathmaking Workshop: December 6\, see session times online. \nSign up for all events at\nwww.pgmusuem.org/events \nFind our outreach team at libraries all over Monterey County on Wednesday afternoons \nAbout the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History \nIn 1883\, the Museum opened its doors among the first wave of natural history museums in America. SUMMARY:Sketching Classes Create Opportunity for Local Youth to Display Art with the Pacific Grove Museum in New Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:PACIFIC GROVE\, Calif. (September 15\, 2025) — The Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History has partnered with local artist Cady DeLay for a series of field sketching classes open to all knowledge levels and ages 12 and up. Participating artists ages 12-18 are also offered the opportunity to show their completed works in a new exhibition the Museum will hang at the Monterey Regional Airport beginning February 2026. \nThe sketching classes will take place on six Sundays between September and December\, with each taking place in a new area and focusing on specific methods of artwork and exploration. Local areas including the Monarch Sanctuary\, Huckleberry Hill\, will make up the terrestrial portion of the classes\, while tidepool sites at Asilomar will encompass the tide pooling portion\, where artists will get to tidepool with marine biologist DeLay and learn how to draw what they’ve found. The series will finish with a final day at the Museum where artists will get the chance to finish their works\, enhance them with materials provided by Cady and the Museum\, and if youth artists would like\, allow the Museum to borrow them for the final exhibit. \nCady DeLay has a background in marine biology and has been an art instructor with various organizations around Monterey and Santa Cruz Counties since graduating from CSUMB’s Science Illustration program in 2022. Cady said\, “Nature journaling has helped me connect with my environment in a more personal way. SUMMARY:Scientific Summer Camps around the Corner for PG Museum
DESCRIPTION:PACIFIC GROVE\, Calif. — The Pacific Grove Museum has released their list of summer camp themes for the 2025 season with a combination of new and favorite themes and an upgraded time model where all grades (K-5) get a full day of camp running from 9am-3pm. Museum summer camps are popular because of their scientific focus\, with campers learning about ecosystems\, wildlife\, and conservation through play\, science activities\, and field trips. “We teach kids scientific concepts through hands-on experience to inspire long-term care and curiosity about the world we live in.” says Dr. Liese Murphree\, the Museum’s Director of Education\, “Campers get to discover aspects of the natural world in fun and accessible ways with friends and professional educators” Returning popular camps include Be a Scientist\, where children will get to conduct scientific experiments with a science show at the end of the week\, and Ocean Exploration\, which takes them down to the beach to go tide pooling\, learn about marine life\, and find special creatures hidden in the sand. New offerings include Nocturnal Ecology camp\, which will include a special evening hike to find crepuscular (twilight and dawn) and nocturnal (night only) animals; and Engineering for the Earth\, where campers will get to design hands-on solutions to environmental issues. Beyond the science\, the museum also focuses on the social\, emotional\, and physical wellbeing of all their campers by creating flexible and supportive learning environments where one-on-one attention is given a priority. “This summer is going to be a fun one for kids at the Museum\, we have so much planned and we’re so excited to see everyone!” Says Murphree\, “But parents be warned: these camps can fill quickly\, so sign up as soon as possible.” Registration opens for Museum Family Members and above Friday\, February 14\, and Monday\, March 3 for the general public. Members will also receive a $35 discount on each camp registration. Families interested in signing up for Museum membership and getting these and other perks can do so at: Support — Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History. SUMMARY:illustrating Nature Returns to the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History on May 2\, 2025
DESCRIPTION:PACIFIC GROVE\, Calif. — Illustrating Nature\, the much-anticipated showing of student works from CSUMB’s graduate Science Illustration Program will once again be on display at the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History starting Friday\, May 2nd. A landmark 15th year of partnership between the Natural History Museum and CSUMB\, the exhibit is a beautiful demonstration of the deep connections between the natural and human worlds. “Each year\, we are given the chance to witness how these talented illustrators interpret the natural world.” Says Dr. Rachel Miller\, the Museum’s Executive Director\, “Every artist brings their own unique perspective\, style\, and personal story behind the illustration they have chosen to exhibit. The Pacific Grove Museum is proud to support these emerging illustrators as they launch their careers and share their incredible talent with our community.” The program at CSUMB is one that prepares its students for the world of scientific illustration\, and they obtain mastery in a variety of artistic techniques and learn techniques for starting a business\, selling designs\, and more. Most students come in with scientific or artistic backgrounds\, and the program takes them through not just the ways to illustrate science but to work with scientists and institutions. “The pieces you’ll see in the exhibit are more than just beautiful pieces of art.” Says Reid Psaltis\, head of the Science Illustration Program at CSUMB. “They are the end products of an extensive amount of planning\, research and effort from our students to tell stories\, explain scientific concepts\, and inspire.” The Exhibit will open with a meet-the-artists reception from 6:30-8:30pm on Friday\, May 2nd. In a change of pace\, the show will have its longest run ever at the Museum with a six-week showing ending June 15th. The Museum and Science Illustration Program would like to extend their thanks to the Arts Council for Monterey County and the Monterey County Board of Supervisors for funding this exhibit work. During its run\, the Museum will host several accompanying events including: · Workshops led by program graduates May 17 and June 14 · Free student art demonstrations on May 24th and June 14th · A student art market held during the Museum’s First Friday on June 6 from 6-8pm where prints\, stickers\, posters\, and more will be sold by the artists themselves.
