SUMMARY:WATER TOWER WITH OTTER OPRY AT MONTEREY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
DESCRIPTION:You can almost feel the sizzle in the air already! On Thursday\, April 9th\, Water Tower will grace the Otter Opry stage\, and this band is literally the talk of the town. At its core\, Water Tower is a triumph of unlikely alchemy—three virtuosos from wildly different worlds\, colliding to create a sound that defies genre.\nKenny Feinstein\, the punk-bluegrass outlaw\, wields banjo\, mandolin\, fiddle\, and guitar like weapons\, splicing Old Time grit with punk rock fury. Tommy Drinkard—audio engineer\, rock frontman\, and banjo prodigy—went from student to champion in a year\, taking 1st place at the Topanga Banjo & Fiddle Contest before merging his reggae-rock swagger into Water Tower’s DNA.\nBut no sonic rebellion is complete without its rhythmic foundation. Taylor Estes (The Bass Lord) is a low-end warlock whose basslines don’t just hold down the groove\, they command it. And John Seltzer is the band’s human metronome\, a mandolin player whose precision and adaptability flow as naturally as his seltzer-water namesake from breakneck bluegrass to psychedelic jam explosions.\nBound by a love for bluegrass\, Old Time\, and jam-grass\, yet electrified by their divergent influences\, Water Tower is a sonic rebellion. This isn’t just a band\, it’s a movement! Come see for yourself\, and let the sizzle wrap its arms around you. A delicious taco bar dinner before the show ($15 in advance\, $20 after April 4th) will add to the magic of the evening. See you there!\n7pm. Monterey United Methodist Church\, 1 Soledad Drive\, Monterey. $35/show (CBA members $30; 15 and under free). www.otteropry.org

SUMMARY:REBECCA FRAZIER WITH OTTER OPRY AT MONTEREY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
DESCRIPTION:Let’s start with an on-point opinion from GRAMMY-winning banjoist and producer Alison Brown: “Rebecca Frazier is an important voice among the group of women whose musical talents and creative visions are recasting bluegrass. A triple threat\, she sings\, plays\, and writes with fire and grace.” This “triple threat” will be gracing the Otter Opry stage on Thursday\, August 21st at the United Methodist Church in Monterey\, and it’s a show you’ll want to put on your calendar without delay. Grounded in her roots as a native Virginian\, and like generations of her ancestors who have lived along Virginia’s coast\, Rebecca Frazier has weathered life’s hurricanes and battering winds. She has also witnessed its luminous beauty\, and her aim is to capture that juxtaposition with her music. “The paradox presented in the last line of my song ‘Hurricanes’ — ’We just keep on living here\, boarding windows every year in paradise’ — that’s what pushed me to my current space\,” she explains. As the first woman to grace the cover of Flatpicking Guitar Magazine\, there’s no question that Frazier’s unique guitar playing will set the tone for this show. And with Charles Butler on banjo\, Larry Cook on bass\, Jordan Santiago on mandolin\, and Laura Orshaw on fiddle\, you can be sure that the music will be moving\, inspirational\, and fully authentic. Being real and true has always been a top priority for Frazier\, and that’s what this show is all about: real\, true bluegrass and acoustic roots music. So come on down\, have a delicious smoked tri-tip dinner with us before the show ($15 in advance\, $20 after August 16th)\, and get ready for an evening you’ll never forget. 7pm. Monterey United Methodist Church\, 1 Soledad Drive\, Monterey. $35/show (CBA members $30; 15 and under free). www.otteropry.org

SUMMARY:THE ALUM RIDGE BOYS & ASHLEE WITH OTTER OPRY
DESCRIPTION:What could possibly be better? It’s bluegrass from the Blue Ridge\, and it’s coming to the Monterey United Methodist Church on Thursday\, June 19th as the next incredible show from Otter Opry. Mining the fertile common ground between bluegrass\, early country music\, and traditional mountain music\, The Alum Ridge Boys & Ashlee are Virginia’s torchbearers of the old-time sound. Deep appreciation for Country and “Hillbilly” music of the ’30s\, ’40s\, and ’50s enables the band to craft tasteful original songs and instrumentals that blend seamlessly alongside the classics. Each member draws from various influences\, including bluegrass\, country\, and rock and roll. Together\, they present a high-energy show filled with nostalgic entertainment\, tight harmonies\, and skillful musicianship. Together\, Seth Mulder\, Colton Powers\, Tyler Griffith\, Chevy Watson\, and Max Silverstein create a powerhouse of music and a stage show you do not want to miss\, and that is why they’re one of the most talked-about young bluegrass bands on the festival circuit today. SUMMARY:BEAN CREEK WITH OTTER OPRY
DESCRIPTION:Starting with the basics: If you have never heard Billy Pitrone sing\, you have missed one of the most incredible and moving bluegrass voices on the planet. Not only that\, but he’s also one of the nicest people ever. OK\, enough of that: Billy and his Bean Creek band – a local favorite for a good long time – will be gracing the Otter Opry stage on Saturday\, April 5th at the United Methodist Church in Monterey. Eeeh hah! Who are these folks? Bean Creek is a bluegrass band that plays straight-ahead traditional style bluegrass. Slightly revised since the passing of original (and deeply missed) band member Pete Hicks\, the band is now joined by Henry and Ella Warde. Enthusiasm and passion\, as well as fine song choices including rousing instrumentals and heartfelt ballads\, are guaranteed to delight foot-stompin’ audiences like you. Dulcet harmonies and fun stage banter are always a solid part of the program\, so get ready for some real fun! Bean Creek was voted Best Band four times by the Northern California Bluegrass Society\, while Billy has captured Best Vocalist eight times since 2008. Rob has also picked up Best Banjo Player in previous years. Band members include Billy Pitrone on guitar and vocals\, Sarah Eblen on bass and vocals\, Rob Horgan on banjo\, Ella Warde on fiddle and vocals and Henry Warde on mandolin and vocals. This is the sweetest\, best\, most talented bunch of bluegrass stars you could ever hope to see and hear. C’mon down! 3pm. Monterey United Methodist Church\, 1 Soledad Drive\, Monterey. $25/show (CBA members $20; 15 and under free). www.otteropry.org.

SUMMARY:CALIFORNIA BLUEGRASS REUNION WITH OTTER OPRY
DESCRIPTION:Having brought the house down at their first two Otter Opry performances\, the California Bluegrass Reunion will be back on Tuesday\, November 19th at the United Methodist Church to do it again. This star-studded band is highlighted by the awesome fiddling of Chad Manning and features an abundance of original instrumentals from mandolinist John Reischman and banjo player Bill Evans. Anchoring the rhythm section is Jim Nunally on guitar and vocals\, Mike Witcher on Dobro\, and Sharon Gilchrist on bass. The show will open with a four-song set by Nell & Jim\, featuring Jim Nunally on vocals\, guitar and banjo\, with Nell Robinson on vocals and miniflute; this amazing duo delivers tight harmonies and original genre-bending music that will get the evening off to a sizzling start. Back to California Bluegrass Reunion: Grammy Award-winning John Reischman is a foundational mandolinist\, composer\, bandleader and musical educator in bluegrass and North American roots and folk music. Bill Evans – winner of the 2022 Steve Martin “Excellence in Banjo” Award – occupies a unique niche in the music world\, celebrated for his varied bluegrass banjo styles as well as his innovative original compositions. Jim Nunally is a musician\, composer\, record producer and teacher – all in addition to being one of the finest guitar players in the world. Chad Manning is a bluegrass\, old-time and swing fiddler who has performed with more famous bands than you can count. Sharon Gilchrist has long made her home in the American acoustic music scene\, performing on concert and festival stages all over North America. Growing up the youngest of five in a musical and artistic family in the suburbs of Los Angeles\, Mike Witcher found his voice playing the Dobro at the age of 14. These musicians have made music in various combinations for decades\, but this all-star performance is an incredible opportunity to see and hear them together. To describe the show as a once-in-a-lifetime (actually\, thrice-in-a-lifetime) opportunity is no exaggeration. The event includes a delicious dinner at 5:30pm ($12.50 before November 17th\, $17.50 at the door). Online sales will end at noon the day of the performance. 7pm. Monterey United Methodist Church\, 1 Soledad Drive\, Monterey. $40/show (CBA members $35; 15 and under free); $12.50-17.50/pre-show dinner. www.otteropry.org

SUMMARY:FRANK SOLIVAN & CHRIS LUQUETTE DUO WITH OTTER OPRY
DESCRIPTION:Otter Opry is bringing another awesome bluegrass program to Monterey United Methodist Church on Wednesday\, October 9th: the Frank Solivan & Chris Luquette Duo. Individually\, these two extraordinary musicians have compelling stories. Frank grew up near Modesto\, California. His grandmother on his father’s side played mandolin and fiddle\, and his father played the banjo\, guitar\, bass\, and mandolin. His mother’s side of the family included classical violin and cello players. Frank fell in love with bluegrass music at an early age and formed his first band\, Generation Gap\, in the late 1980s. After his service in the US Navy\, he decided to form his own band\, Dirty Kitchen — a reference to the gourmet meals he prepares for friends and family. Frank holds Chris in high esteem. “In the 11 years Chris has been playing with me\, I’ve seen him grow into a wonderful man\,” he says. “Chris is an inspiration\, and I feel like I’m a better musician and human because of his contributions\, on and off stage. We’ve traveled the world and made some of the best music of my life together.” With his roots in the Seattle music scene\, Chris Luquette seamlessly switches from jazz to rock to bluegrass. His acoustic guitar playing really stands out\, but this multi-instrumentalist is equally at home playing mandolin\, drums\, bass\, electric guitar\, banjo\, and Greek bouzouki. Chris toured with Dirty Kitchen for 11 years; he was also a founding member of Seattle-based Northern Departure and has found himself sitting in with Jerry Douglas\, Emmylou Harris\, Rob Ickes\, and many others. So come on out and listen to this remarkable duo in what is guaranteed to be a brilliant performance. The event includes a public jam starting at 4:00pm and a delicious smoked meatloaf dinner at 5:30pm ($12.50 before October 5th\, $17.50 at the door). Online ticket sales will end at noon the day of the performance. 7pm. Monterey United Methodist Church\, 1 Soledad Drive\, Monterey. $35/show (CBA members $30; 15 and under free); $12.50-17.50/pre-show dinner. Tickets and information at www.otteropry.org.
