SUMMARY:Afternoon with the Artists: Jeffrey Becom and Lucas Blok
DESCRIPTION:Join us in the galleries for an inspiring afternoon with artists Jeffrey Becom and Lucas Blok as they share their insights into The Persistence of Color II. Through their vibrant and distinctive works\, the artists will explore the significance of color as a central force in art and life\, reflecting on their creative journeys and the personal stories that have shaped their practice. Advance purchase is required. Seating is limited\, so we recommend reserving your tickets early. $5 MMA Members\, Students\, Military\, Under 18\, and SNAP Participants with EBT $20 General Admission. As a writer\, designer\, visual anthropologist\, photographer\, and painter for over 40 years\, Becom’s artistic sensibilities have stood squarely in the colorist realm. With his partner\, Sally Aberg\, he has authored two award-winning photography books\, Mediterranean Color and Maya Color: The Painted Villages of Mesoamerica. He is the subject of a PBS/BBC documentary entitled For the Colors\, A Journey Through Italy. His artwork has been featured in over 100 solo and group exhibitions. Becom’s work is held in private and public collections worldwide. Since 1990\, Becom’s photographs have been represented locally by the Weston Gallery in Carmel. His paintings are represented exclusively by the historic Carmel Art Association where he currently serves as President of the Board of Directors. Lucas Blok’s artwork is a dance with color. Surrendering to the rhythm and flow of his paintings invites a participatory experience. His paintings allow us to both find and lose ourselves in the haze of an unrelenting\, pulsating color. With an extensive body of work\, Blok’s paintings are in the collections of the Legion of Honor in San Francisco\, Crocker Museum of Art in Sacramento\, Triton Museum of Art in Santa Clara\, Monterey Museum of Art\, Museum of Design\, Art and Architecture in Culver City\, Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula\, and St. Francis Hospital\, San Francisco.

Founded in 1946 and hailed by The Boston Globe as “the most important American quartet in history\,” the ensemble draws on a deep and vital engagement to the classics\, while embracing the mission of championing new works\, a vibrant combination of the familiar and the daring. Each performance of the Juilliard String Quartet is a unique experience\, bringing together the four members’ profound understanding\, total commitment\, and unceasing curiosity in sharing the wonders of the string quartet literature.\n\nAdding to its celebrated discography\, an album of works by Beethoven\, Bartók\, and Dvořák was released by Sony Classical in April 2021 to critical acclaim. Additionally\, Sony Masterworks released a JSQ catalog release (The Early Juilliard Recordings) in June 2021. In the fall of 2018\, the JSQ released an album on Sony featuring the world premiere recording of Mario Davidovsky’s Fragments (2016)\, together with Beethoven’s Quartet Op. 95 and Bartók’s Quartet No. 1. Additionally\, Sony Classical’s 2014 reissue of the Quartet’s landmark recordings of the first four Elliott Carter String Quartets along with the 2013 recording of Carter’s fifth quartet traces a remarkable period in the evolution of both the composer and the ensemble. The Quartet’s recordings of the Bartók and Schoenberg Quartets\, as well as those of Debussy\, Ravel and Beethoven\, have won Grammy Awards\, and in 2011 the JSQ became the first classical music ensemble to receive a lifetime achievement award from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences.\n\nDevoted master teachers\, the members of the Juilliard String Quartet offer classes and open rehearsals when on tour. The JSQ is String Quartet in Residence at the Juilliard School and its members – Areta Zhulla\, Ronald Copes\, Molly Carr\, and Astrid Schween – are all sought-after teachers on the string and chamber music faculties. Each May\, they host the five-day internationally recognized Juilliard String Quartet Seminar. During the summer\, the JSQ works closely on string quartet repertoire with students at the Tanglewood Music Center.
