DESCRIPTION:Palenke Arts proudly presents AZA band in concert – Amazight music from Morocco .\nAZA unites traditional Tamazight music\, indigenous to the Atlas Mountains of Morocco\, with the global influences of its diverse members. Evocative of Saharan-African blues\, yet with an original style that truly defies categorization\, AZA’s stirring performances feature deep\, danceable rhythms\, intricate string melodies\, and soaring\, soulful vocals. Visually dynamic and engaging performers\, AZA has been inspiring international audiences for more than 20 years.\nFounding members Fattah Abbou and Mohamed Aoualou are Imazighen native to the High Atlas mountain region of Morocco\, where they played and studied music for over twenty-five years\, and are recognized as master musicians. They formed the sextet AZA in Santa Cruz\, California\, after moving to the United States eight years ago. The unique exchange between the High Atlas and Californian musicians has proved potent; AZA has produced two albums of original compositions\, and performed at music festivals\, clubs\, and universities around the United States and abroad in Ireland\, Canada\, and Morocco.\nAZA’s endeavors are not limited to music. The Imazighen (incorrectly labeled “Berber”)\, are the indigenous people of North Africa whose recorded history dates back to 3300 years ago. Fattah and Mohamed have always been part of the Amazigh movement and struggle to revive a culture that has been marginalized for centuries. Through music and cultural events\, AZA continues to inspire awareness in people of all ages about the Amazigh culture\, that it may be recognized and appreciated among the indigenous cultures of the world.

DESCRIPTION:We will start the workshop with a meditation about letting go in the peaceful selling of the the Yoga Shala. Afterwards will be playing with colors with wet-on-wet watercolors. This style requires the artist to let go and let flow\, creating many unforeseen results. Out of formless colors we bring out the forms. All levels are welcome. Regardless of level\, you will bring home some wonders. Material supplied. \nJanaka Stagnaro has been a Waldorf teacher for 25 years and currently is an artist-teacher for the Arts Council of Monterey. He has a studio in Carmel and is a meditation teacher at the Yoga Shala.

The program features works by Mozart\, Shostakovich and a world-premiere composition by Andrea Casarrubios. \nFULL DESCRIPTION \nProgram: \nWolfgang Amadeus Mozart Piano Quartet No. 1 in G Minor\, K.478\nAndrea Casarrubios Piano Quintet (CMMB commission)\nDmitri Shostakovich Piano Quintet in G Minor\, op. 57 \nArtistic Director and violist Luke Fleming formed Manhattan Chamber Players. This collective of players came together to share their love of chamber music. All the members have their own impressive careers – as soloists\, members of professional string quartets\, piano trios\, or other chamber groups\, and even two world-renowned composers. This group brings the flexibility to perform practically anything in the rich string/wind/piano chamber repertoire. \n As a guest soloist at the Auditorio Nacional in Madrid\, Ms. Casarrubios performed her Concerto for Cello and Orchestra\, MIRAGE (2019).  SEVEN (2020) for solo cello\, “a searching\, intense\, and elegiac tribute to the essential workers during the pandemic” (The New York Times)\, was commissioned by cellist Thomas Mesa and has been performed worldwide. Ms. Casarrubios’ compositions have been presented by organizations such as the Philadelphia Orchestra\, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra\, the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra\, Carnegie Hall\, Washington Performing Arts\, World Heritage Festival\, Sphinx Organization\, Trio Appassionata\, the Manhattan Chamber Players\, Decoda\, Ensemble Connect\, Astral Artists\, NPR\, Canada’s CKIA\, and the Spanish National Radio RNE. \nTickets are available on our website using the link below or by calling our friendly office at 831-625-2212. SUMMARY:Middlebury Institute Mural Dedication Celebration
DESCRIPTION:The mural\, designed by Yermo Aranda\, is located on the Monterey Path of History and highlights how the Institute’s history is intertwined with that of downtown Monterey and the region. It features a view of the Bay and agricultural fields to highlight the interdependence of people and the land. The current campus is located on the ancestral land of the Rumsien Ohlone and Esselen indigenous people\, with traditional basketry and tule boats depicted in the mural\, as well as acorns\, an important food source. This project has been in the works since 2021 with support from the Old Monterey Foundation. This local nonprofit works to support and enhance the artistic\, cultural\, and historic environment of downtown Monterey. \nThe Institute’s Committee on Art in Public Places (ICAPP) has shaped the mural based on input from faculty\, staff\, and students. Key themes that the community wanted to be represented included the Institute’s international and multicultural focus\,  Monterey’s unique coastal and agricultural environment\, the indigenous people and cultures of this region\, and\nthe recognition of Monterey as the “Language Capital of the World”.

DESCRIPTION:The Carmel Sunset Rotary’s The Pointe of Art fundraiser is an exquisite and captivating event that brings together art enthusiasts and philanthropists for a night of creativity and support. \nHeld Thursday evening from 5pm – 8pm on October 26th\, 2023 in the beautiful foyer of The Carmel Sunset Cultural Center\, this fundraiser showcases a diverse range of artworks from 25 professional artists with local galleries or studios. The event features stunning paintings\, sculptures\, and mixed-media pieces – all available for purchase through silent auction. \nAll proceeds support the young dancers of the Monterey Peninsula Ballet Theater – “where talents and life skills may grow in an inspiring and nurturing environment”. The Pointe of Art is open to the public and admission is free. We encourage parents of the dancers to attend\, where you can purchase a hard-copy book featuring the dancers\, their artists\, and the works created\, and get it signed by the artist that night. We also encourage supporters of the MPBT to attend and bring your art-buying patrons with you! We will also have a raffle to win a fabulous gift basket\, so everyone has a chance to contribute at some level. \nThere will be live musical performances\, ballet performances by members of the Monterey Peninsula Ballet Theater\, and engaging art demonstrations taking place throughout the evening. Guests will be treated to a delightful assortment of gourmet food and fine wines\, creating a social atmosphere where artists\, dancers\, and the public can meet each other.
