SUMMARY:Art of Rehabilitation
DESCRIPTION:What if art could change lives? \nA powerful new exhibit at the County of Monterey Administration building in Salinas proves it can. The installation showcases work by inmates from Soledad Correctional Training Facility—videos\, audio\, poetry and visual pieces that reveal the transformative potential of creativity and rehabilitation behind bars. \nCreated through the Life on Art’s – Rehabilitation program\, these works are more than art—they’re part of a proven strategy to reduce recidivism and prepare inmates for successful reentry into society. The program complements existing education and mental health services\, giving incarcerated individuals a vital tool for self-expression and healing. \nEach piece tells a story. Hear directly from the artists themselves as they share the thoughts\, struggles\, and hopes that shaped their work. This isn’t just an art show—it’s a window into the humanity of people often unseen\, and a testament to the rehabilitative power of creative expression.

SUMMARY:Monterey Symphony Opens 80th Season with world premiere of Steven Mackey’s Saxophone concerto featuring Timothy McAllister
DESCRIPTION:Carmel/Monterey CA – Come celebrate the Monterey Symphony’s 80th Anniversary season opening concerts on Saturday\, October 18\, 2025\, at 7:30 PM and Sunday\, October 19\, 2025\, at 3:00 PM with Music Director and conductor Jayce Ogren. \n“We begin our 80th anniversary season with the world premiere of Anemology\, a Monterey Symphony co-commission with the Seattle and Utah symphonies. This brilliant\, colorful\, and intoxicating new work pairs one of the greatest composers of our time\, Steven Mackey\, with one of the most dynamic soloists working today\, saxophonist Timothy McAllister. It’s not to be missed\, nor is Rachmaninoff’s dramatic and tuneful Symphony No. 2\, one of my favorite pieces in the repertoire\,” says Jayce Ogren. \n“McAllister possesses a rare and special virtuosity which I’ve become familiar with through various collaborations over the past 20 years. His playing howls\, grooves\, flutters\, and flows like the wind\,” says Mackey. Mackey worked closely with McAllister during the composition process to explore the saxophone’s range of sounds\, textures\, and extended techniques\, shaping the wind-inspired sound world the composer envisioned. “In Anemology\, the saxophone soloist is the wind\, and the orchestra is the landscape\, topography\, scenery\, etc. that is stirred and animated by its movement\,” says Mackey. \nSATURDAY: \nAll Saturday night patrons are invited to an opening night pre-concert party in the Sunset Center lobby. Guests will be treated to live music\, one complimentary glass of champagne\, and a photobooth. The event is 6:00-7:30 PM and is included with all concert tickets. Additionally\, a pre-concert lecture by Musicologist Christopher Anderson-Bazzoli with guest composer Steve Mackey will be held on Saturday\, 6:30-7:00 PM in the Sunset Center auditorium. \nSUNDAY:\nThe Symphony Lobby Sessions return this season with live music in the lobby from 1:30-1:50 PM. The October Lobby Session features Symphony principal bassoonist Anne Ranzani. Additionally\, a pre-concert lecture by Music Director Jayce Ogren with guest composer Steve Mackey will be held on Sunday\, 2:00-2:30 PM\, in the Sunset Center auditorium. \nTickets are $50 for Tier 3\, $70 for Tier 2\, and $90 for Tier 1 seats. Students\, teachers\, and military tickets are $12. \nAbout the Monterey Symphony: The Monterey Symphony was founded in 1946 and presents double weekend performances during the academic calendar\, opening the season at Forest Theater\, followed by six more programs at the Sunset Center in Carmel-by-the-Sea. For each program\, the Symphony orchestra is comprised of 80 professional musicians from throughout California. The Symphony is committed to bringing people together through orchestral classical music and using the healing powers of music to transform lives. The Symphony actively engages patrons of all ages through a variety of partnerships and initiatives\, including performances for thousands of local school children. Jayce Ogren\, the Symphony’s 12th Music Director\, recently renewed his contract through 2030. The Symphony’s stated mission is to entertain and engage our community through musical performance and education. Monterey Symphony regularly receives national attention for the strength of its audience support\, robust subscription renewals and audience retention. \nPerformances at Sunset Center\, Carmel\, San Carlos and 9th Ave.\nwww.montereysymphony.org \n# # #

SUMMARY:TONY FURTADO TRIO WITH OTTER OPRY AT MONTEREY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
DESCRIPTION:What do you get when you put three brilliant multi-instrumentalists together? You get a fantastic show! And that’s just what Otter Opry has in store for you on Friday\, October 10th\, with the unbeatable combination of Tony Furtado\, Luke Price\, and Simon Chrisman bringing their special brand of music to the stage.\nTony is an evocative and soulful singer\, a wide-ranging songwriter and a virtuoso multi-instrumentalist adept on banjo\, cello-banjo\, slide guitar and baritone ukulele who mixes and matches sounds and styles with the flair of a master chef. (He’s also an accomplished sculptor\, but that’s another story.)\nLuke – a five-time Grand National Fiddle Champion – is a multi-instrumentalist performer\, composer and studio musician based in Portland\, OR. He has his roots in American fiddling and swing traditions\, which have influenced his rhythm\, taste and style as they have spread into Soul\, Jazz\, Pop and Americana. Luke brings a unique voice to any music he plays\, whether he’s on the fiddle\, electric guitar or singing.\nHammer dulcimer wizard Simon Chrisman brings a whole new approach to an instrument previously thought to have limited range and technique. His inventive virtuosic touch and sophisticated rhythmic sensibilities are redefining the instrument and earning the attention of musicians from all over the world.\nWith their dizzying musical toolbox\, the Tony Furtado Trio represents the best in Americana Roots. This is a show you definitely don’t want to miss! The event includes a delicious chicken dinner at 5:30pm ($15 before October 4th\, $20 at the door). Online sales will end at 11am the day of the performance.\n7pm. Monterey United Methodist Church\, 1 Soledad Drive\, Monterey. $35/show (CBA members $30; 15 and under free); $15-20/pre-show dinner.
