SUMMARY:Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History Presents “Tethered Light” A Driftwood Sculpture Exhibition by Raphaele Cohen-Bacry On view January 21 – April 26
DESCRIPTION:The Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History announces the presentation of “Tethered Light\,” a sculptural exhibition by California-based artist Raphaele Cohen-Bacry\, on view January 21 through April 26. The exhibition features a collection of sculptural works created from driftwood gathered along California’s rugged coastline. \nRooted in the landscapes and histories of California’s shores\, Tethered Light transforms weathered\, fire-marked and ocean-worn wood into expressive sculptural forms that speak to environmental change\, endurance and renewal. Many of the materials used in the exhibition were collected from beaches where wildfire-scarred trees met the sea\, carrying visible traces of both destruction and survival. \nBright marine ropes bind the sculptural elements together\, referencing the maritime traditions of the Pacific Coast — from fishing vessels and buoys to migration routes and navigation systems that have long shaped life along the water. These luminous cords contrast with the aged wood\, symbolizing the human impulse to connect\, secure and preserve in an ever-changing environment. \nSeveral pieces in the exhibition are suspended\, appearing to hover and sway in space. These floating forms suggest motion\, balance and the shifting relationship between land and sea — a reminder that California’s coastline remains in constant dialogue with wind\, water and time. \n“Tethered Light is a meditation on resilience and regeneration — sculptures shaped by the sea and bound by memory\, inviting us to reflect on our deep connection to California’s coast and the shifting balance between nature\, culture and change\,”\n— Raphaele Cohen-Bacry \nPresented at the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History\, the exhibition aligns closely with the museum’s mission to inspire discovery and stewardship of the natural world. Through sculptural storytelling\, Tethered Light invites visitors to consider the fragile beauty of coastal ecosystems and the responsibility we share in protecting them. \nLocated on the edge of Monterey Bay\, the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History serves as a gateway to understanding the rich biodiversity and cultural history of California’s Central Coast. Tethered Light offers a contemplative artistic extension of that mission\, blending science\, environment and art into a single immersive experience. \nSpecial Event \nVirtual Artist Meet & Greet\nFebruary 22 | 12:00 – 1:00 p.m.\nJoin artist Raphaele Cohen-Bacry for a live virtual conversation exploring the inspirations\, materials and stories behind Tethered Light. Details and registration information will be available via the museum. \nExhibition Details \nExhibition: Tethered Light\nArtist: Raphaele Cohen-Bacry\nDates: January 21 – April 26\nVenue: Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History\nWebsite / Artist Studio: Raphaele Cohen-Bacry Studio \nFor museum hours\, admission and exhibition information\, visit www.pgmuseum.org.

SUMMARY:Arts in New Youth Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Chris Morello \nExecutive Director\, Monterey Regional Airport \n831-648-7000 \ncmorello@montereyairport.com \nMonterey Regional Airport Weaves the Natural World with the Arts in New Youth Exhibition: Featuring the work and stories of talented young artists from Monterey County \nMONTEREY\, Calif. (January 30\, 2026) — Timing perfectly with the first blooms of spring\, the Monterey Airport’s Art at the Airport program unveils a special exhibition: Nature Journaling: A Lens into Conservation. This exhibit\, in partnership with the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History\, explores the deep connections between the human and natural worlds through nature journals and art created by Monterey County youth ages 3-17. \nCurated by the Museum’s Interpretive Programs Manager Natalie Johnston and Education Director Liese Murphree\, the exhibit explores the ways in which humans are part of nature and how flora\, fauna\, and habitats in Monterey County feel meaningful. “These nature journals show kids’ superpowers of observation\, and we are honored to partner with the airport on this project!” says Murphree. \nThe pieces invite visitors to engage with the work the same way it was created: by slowing down\, observing\, and being curious about the world around us. “I am inspired every day by the curiosity and love of nature our young visitors have. My goal with this exhibit is to share some of that wonder.” says Johnston. Inspiring wonder includes inviting visitors to start their own nature journal by sharing techniques (hint\, it’s pretty easy and fun). \nNature Journaling: A Lens into Conservation will be displayed at the Monterey Regional Airport’s Youth Art Gallery now through the spring of 2026. Passengers and airport visitors are encouraged to view the new Art at the Airport exhibition and celebrate our region’s talented young artists and stunning natural wonders. \nAbout the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History \nIn 1883\, the Museum opened its doors among the first wave of natural history museums in America. Naturalists of this era began a national tradition of hands-on science education and nature preservation\, a tradition the Museum has continued for over 140 years. The Museum’s mission is to inspire discovery\, wonder\, and stewardship of our cultural and natural world. The Museum supports conservation\, scientific literacy\, co-curation\, and deep learning towards a resilient community and sustainable future. Their work is made possible\, in part\, by the following generous donors: American Water Charitable Foundation\, City of Pacific Grove\, Community Foundation for Monterey County\, Harden Foundation\, Helen Johnson Endowment Funds\, Monterey Peninsula Foundation\, and Shelby Cullom Davis Charitable Fund. The Museum is open to the public Wednesday-Sunday\, 10am-4pm. For more information visit www.pgmuseum.org or on social media at @PGMuseum. \nAbout the Monterey Regional Airport: \nMonterey Regional Airport (MRY) is Monterey County’s only commercial airport and accommodates over 600\,000 passengers each year. The airport serves nine nonstop markets with an average of 17 daily departures. We are committed to providing our customers with superior services and a convenient\, hassle-free experience in a safe\, secure\, professional environment. The MRY Metamorphosis\, an FAA-required Safety Enhancement Program\, includes a replacement terminal that will welcome passengers in June 2027\, and will transform how Monterey residents and visitors travel. SUMMARY:WATER TOWER WITH OTTER OPRY AT MONTEREY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
DESCRIPTION:You can almost feel the sizzle in the air already! On Thursday\, April 9th\, Water Tower will grace the Otter Opry stage\, and this band is literally the talk of the town. At its core\, Water Tower is a triumph of unlikely alchemy—three virtuosos from wildly different worlds\, colliding to create a sound that defies genre.\nKenny Feinstein\, the punk-bluegrass outlaw\, wields banjo\, mandolin\, fiddle\, and guitar like weapons\, splicing Old Time grit with punk rock fury. Tommy Drinkard—audio engineer\, rock frontman\, and banjo prodigy—went from student to champion in a year\, taking 1st place at the Topanga Banjo & Fiddle Contest before merging his reggae-rock swagger into Water Tower’s DNA.\nBut no sonic rebellion is complete without its rhythmic foundation. Taylor Estes (The Bass Lord) is a low-end warlock whose basslines don’t just hold down the groove\, they command it. And John Seltzer is the band’s human metronome\, a mandolin player whose precision and adaptability flow as naturally as his seltzer-water namesake from breakneck bluegrass to psychedelic jam explosions.\nBound by a love for bluegrass\, Old Time\, and jam-grass\, yet electrified by their divergent influences\, Water Tower is a sonic rebellion. This isn’t just a band\, it’s a movement! Come see for yourself\, and let the sizzle wrap its arms around you. A delicious taco bar dinner before the show ($15 in advance\, $20 after April 4th) will add to the magic of the evening. See you there!\n7pm. Monterey United Methodist Church\, 1 Soledad Drive\, Monterey. $35/show (CBA members $30; 15 and under free). www.otteropry.org

SUMMARY:Anza Expedition Talk at First Theater
DESCRIPTION:Anza Expedition Talk at First Theater \nMonterey\, Calif.—To acknowledge the 250th anniversary of the Anza Expedition\, Monterey State Historic Park is hosting a free talk about the journey titled “Outfitting the Expedition: The Dress and Equipment of the Anza Party 1775-1776” in California’s First Theater on April 15th at 6pm by acclaimed historian\, illustrator and author David Rickman. \nBetween 1775 and 1776\, Juan Bautista de Anza led an expedition of 240 settlers including women and children from New Spain\, which is now Mexico\, into California and up to San Francisco to establish a mission and a presidio. On March 10\, 1776\, the Anza Expedition arrived in Monterey on horseback\, mule and foot before heading north. The whole 1\,200-mile journey opened California up for Spanish colonization and is now commemorated by the National Park Service’s Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail. \nThe talk will take a close look at what the expedition members wore\, what they carried\, and how they rode\, based on original documents and images from the time. Rickman is the author of the Sutter’s Forst Costume Manual and the upcoming Where Worlds Met\, a two-volume history of dress in California from 1822 to 1860 published by California State Parks.

Beneath the humor is a relatable story about growing up\, finding your people\, and embracing the chaos of adulthood. \nIf you love witty comedy\, bold musical theatre\, and puppets behaving badly\, Avenue Q is the must-see show of the season. Grab your tickets now and get ready to laugh\, cringe\, and cheer your way through one of the most unique musicals ever to hit the stage!

SUMMARY:Illustrating Nature Returns to the PG Museum on May 1
DESCRIPTION:A long-standing partnership between CSU Monterey Bay and the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History continues May 1 with the 16th Annual Illustrating Nature Exhibition. Showcasing the talented work of graduates of CSUMB’s Science Illustration Program\, Illustrating Nature is a tour de force in the ways scientific illustration and art take form. Thanks to the Arts Council for Monterey County and the Monterey County Board of Supervisors\, the show will be bigger than ever\, featuring an expanded display reaching across both floors of the Museum. This year will also see the return of audience favorites\, including the artist’s field journals on display.  “Illustrating Nature is our most popular annual exhibit\,” says Maya Sosa\, the Museum’s Exhibitions Coordinator. “The art these graduates create showcases their talent and creativity and reminds us of the many ways beauty can be found in nature.”\nThe show will run from May 1 through June 7th\, with a special free opening reception at the Museum on Friday\, May 1\, from 6-8pm. The reception will feature the opportunity to meet the artists and their instructors and explore the artwork in its expanded spaces. “As with recent years\, our upcoming exhibit continues to highlight newer applications of Science Illustration\, including infographics and comics in addition to paintings and illustrations guests are used to seeing\,” says Reid Psaltis\, head of the Science Illustration Program and former graduate. “Our current group of students has worked hard to find ways of communicating the scientific subjects they’re passionate about.”\nGuests at the opening reception excited to discuss the art with the artists will have the opportunity to receive a sticker of their work. Visitors interested in more will also have plenty of opportunities to purchase\, learn about\, and create their own art over the course of the exhibition run with a variety of events including artist demonstrations from current students on 5/16 and 5/30\, classes with the Museum taught by program graduates for all skill levels\, and a special artist market on May 22 where visitors can purchase art prints\, stickers\, originals\, and more from participating graduates. “The artist market is so much fun\,” says Noelle Fletcher\, the Museum’s Marketing & Events Manager. “The students have been working all year on incredible works\, and we only get to see a subset in the show\, but the market gives an opportunity to see much more and support them as they move into this next career chapter.”\nIllustrating Nature will run May 1 through June 7 at the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History. Get a sneak peek after April 10th at www.pgmuseum.org and sign up for events at www.pgmuseum.org/events. The talent will continue in June with a new exhibit in the Museum’s popular Beyond Illustrating Nature space by program graduate Amy Koehler\, also funded by the Arts Council for Monterey County and the Monterey County Board of Supervisors.
