DESCRIPTION:Monterey Symphony Announces 2026-2027 Season at Sunset Center \nand Love Letter to New York at the Forest Theater\nPerformances at Sunset Center\, Carmel\, San Carlos and 9th Ave. \nCarmel/Monterey CA – Monterey Symphony announces its 81st season with two Love Letter to New York performances at the Forest Theater and six concert sets at the Sunset Center. \n“We are bringing world-class\, dynamic soloists to the Symphony\, and this season’s line up is absolutely stellar. Making their Monterey Symphony debuts\, Jonathan Biss is one of America’s greatest living pianists\, and Alexi Kenney is a young superstar of the violin. Ran Dank and Soeyon Kate Lee—husband and wife\, and both outstanding piano soloists in their own right—return to the Monterey Symphony as a powerful piano duo with Dvorak’s tuneful Slavonic Dances and the world premiere for two pianos and orchestra by Chinese-American composer Chen Yi\,” says Music Director Jayce Ogren. \n“In May\, our collaboration with the San Francisco based chorus VOLTI continues with Verdi’s dramatic Te Deum and Mahler’s epic Symphony No. 2\, Resurrection\, the first ever Monterey Symphony performances of this beloved\, overwhelming work\,” says Ogren. \n“In addition to iconic favorites like Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5\, Copland’s Appalachian Spring\, Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4\, and in March we’ll present something very special. Brahms wrote just four symphonies\, considered by many to be the greatest works in the orchestral repertoire. In one weekend\, the Monterey Symphony will play them all. DESCRIPTION:The Baroque & Classical Academy provides training from internationally acclaimed Bach Festival musicians and learning opportunities at the Carmel Bach Festival. BCA musicians have a full rehearsal schedule\, including guided sessions with mentors\, in preparation for the Baroque & Classical Academy Quartet Showcase Concert. Throughout July\, BCA musicians learn how to curate programs\, create socially conscious programs\, develop audiences\, build donor relationships\, and more. Musicians attend educational workshops with Festival musician mentors\, film composers\, board members\, and others to learn skills to help them succeed as professional classical musicians. \nThe quartet also enriches the traditional Carmel Bach Festival community by offering free public masterclasses and performing a Showcase Concert featuring a program curated by the BCA musicians with guidance from Festival mentors.

SUMMARY:Carmel Bach Festival: Beethoven 6 Symphony & Appalachian Spring
DESCRIPTION:Beethoven subtitled his Pastoral Symphony “Recollections of Country Life”. Each of its five movements depicts a countryside scene. The first movement conveys the calm joy of arriving in the countryside\, with gentle\, flowing melodies. The second evokes a babbling brook\, while woodwinds mimic birdsong. In the third\, people dance and celebrate with lively rhythms. The fourth depicts a sudden\, dramatic thunderstorm\, one of Beethoven’s earliest musical portrayals of nature’s power. The final movement offers a peaceful shepherd’s song and a sense of restored serenity. For fans of Disney\, this piece will sound familiar\, as it was featured in Fantasia (1940). \nAppalachian Spring takes its title from a rural Pennsylvania farmhouse and evokes the optimism and spirit of pioneer life in early America. Featuring the iconic Shaker melody Simple Gifts\, Copland’s work is one of his most celebrated\, known for its open textures\, folk-inspired melodies\, and enduring association with the quintessential “American sound.” \nCelebrating a different perspective on the America landscape\, Puerto Rican composer Angélica Negrón is our featured composer this year. Her work\, Marejada\, captures the movement and energy of the sea through inventive textures and rhythmic drive. Negrón offers a fresh and compelling voice that complements Copland’s vision while reflecting her own cultural and musical soundscape.
