SUMMARY:Monterey Symphony Announces 2026-2027 Season at Sunset Center
DESCRIPTION:Monterey Symphony Announces 2026-2027 Season at Sunset Center \nand Love Letter to New York at the Forest Theater\nPerformances at Sunset Center\, Carmel\, San Carlos and 9th Ave. \nCarmel/Monterey CA – Monterey Symphony announces its 81st season with two Love Letter to New York performances at the Forest Theater and six concert sets at the Sunset Center. \n“We are bringing world-class\, dynamic soloists to the Symphony\, and this season’s line up is absolutely stellar. Making their Monterey Symphony debuts\, Jonathan Biss is one of America’s greatest living pianists\, and Alexi Kenney is a young superstar of the violin. Ran Dank and Soeyon Kate Lee—husband and wife\, and both outstanding piano soloists in their own right—return to the Monterey Symphony as a powerful piano duo with Dvorak’s tuneful Slavonic Dances and the world premiere for two pianos and orchestra by Chinese-American composer Chen Yi\,” says Music Director Jayce Ogren. \n“In May\, our collaboration with the San Francisco based chorus VOLTI continues with Verdi’s dramatic Te Deum and Mahler’s epic Symphony No. 2\, Resurrection\, the first ever Monterey Symphony performances of this beloved\, overwhelming work\,” says Ogren. \n“In addition to iconic favorites like Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5\, Copland’s Appalachian Spring\, Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4\, and in March we’ll present something very special. Brahms wrote just four symphonies\, considered by many to be the greatest works in the orchestral repertoire. In one weekend\, the Monterey Symphony will play them all. It’s a beautiful opportunity to hear these sublime works in close proximity to one another\, and I very much hope you’ll join us\,” says Ogren. \n2026-2027 Season Tickets: SUBSCRIPTIONS on sale starting MAY 1\, 2026. SINGLE TICKETS on sale JULY 31\, 2025. For questions\, call the Symphony ticket office at (831) 646-8511\, Mon-Fri\, 10 AM – 4 PM. Tickets: $50-$90\, $12 for students\, teachers\, and military.

SUMMARY:A Documentary Screening: The Life and Legacy of Julia Morgan
DESCRIPTION:As part of this year’s celebration of the women who shaped Carmel’s architectural legacy\, the Carmel Heritage Society and the American Institute of Architects Monterey Bay Chapter invite the community to a special screening of Julia Morgan\, Architect of Dreams\, a documentary on the life and work of pioneering architect Julia Morgan. \nMorgan’s work resonates deeply on the Monterey Peninsula. She designed the beloved Asilomar Conference Center in Pacific Grove\, as well as the Dr. Emma W. Pope House overlooking the Carmel Mission—one of the residences featured on this year’s Carmel House Tour. Though best known for Hearst Castle at San Simeon\, Morgan devoted much of her career to buildings that served and uplifted women\, including numerous YWCA facilities and structures at Mills College.\nThe screening of Julia Morgan\, Architect of Dreams is presented as a companion event to the 32nd Annual Carmel House Tour\, themed “Designing Women\,” which takes place Saturday\, July 18. Buy tickets at carmelheritage.org; $50 presale and $60 on the day of the Tour. House docent volunteers are still needed and will receive a free ticket. Contact executivedirector@aiamontereybay.org to sign-up.

SUMMARY:Carmel Bach Festival: Bach & Rebel
DESCRIPTION:This program traces how composers use music to explore our deepest responses to the world — grief and wonder\, chaos and order\, sorrow and joy.\nThe journey begins in darkness and disorder: Purcell’s Music for the Funeral of Queen Mary confronts mortality\, while Rebel’s Les Élémens erupts from a single “Chaos” chord\, giving form to Earth\, Air\, Fire\, and Water — elemental forces whose turbulent beginnings echo the disorder and beauty of human life. \nAt the program’s center\, Kaija Saariaho’s Nuits\, Adieu evokes transformation\, impermanence\, and reflection through whispering voices and shifting harmonies. Sandström’s expansion of Purcell’s Hear My Prayer\, O Lord gradually intensifies\, layering voices and harmonies to convey human hope and resilience. The program culminates in Bach’s festive Cantata No. 214\, a joyful celebration of life\, energy\, and the enduring human spirit.
